I, too, teach America.

I am the melanated educator.
They send me to teach in schools
With slaveholder’s names,
But I work,
Shape futures,
And strengthen communities.

Tomorrow,
I’ll be leading
When evaluations come.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me,
“You can’t teach that,”
Then.

Besides,
They’ll see how rich my history is
And be ashamed—

I, too, am History.
